In Suffolk County, administration of the Civil Service Law is carried out under the direction of the Suffolk County Personnel Director. The Suffolk County Department of Human Resources, Personnel and Civil Service is responsible for overseeing personnel actions taken by some 241 employing jurisdictions including towns, school districts, villages, library districts, water districts, etc. Collectively, these jurisdictions employ some 40,000 individuals.

The majority of all jobs fall within the competitive class, which is characterized by examinations used to ascertain the relative merit and fitness of candidates. Examination announcements are also posted in the Hauppauge Office of the Suffolk County Department of Human Resources, Personnel and Civil Service and at our Riverhead Office located in the Riverhead County Center.

Suffolk County Civil Service


Summary:

Under the direction of an Examiner IV or V, an employee in this position administers Civil Service examinations to the public. The Examiner III is usually assigned to a classroom or other specialized exam setting and is responsible for administering a Civil Service exam to a group of people.

Typical Work Activities
  • Administers a variety of Civil Service examinations;
  • Distributes and collects examination papers for written examinations;
  • Maintains security of examination material and reports any unusual occurrences;
  • Checks attendance against a room list and verifies identity of candidates.
  • Adheres to written instructions for examination administration and directs candidates in following procedures.

Minimum Requirements:

Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Mathematics, and eight (8) years of administrative experience in managing and implementing information technology projects, five (5) years of which has included implementing and administering financial based systems.

An employee in this position is responsible for the creation, implementation and coordination of all information technology projects originating within the County’s centralized Information Technology Department or a large County department. The incumbent acts as the liaison between the department and any user departments and/or divisions, and vendors, and manages any information technology project requiring the expenditure of resources, from development through completion. The work requires independent judgment and includes responsibility for supervising a varying number of employees depending on the projects. Work is performed under the general direction of a technical administrator

Business Intelligence technologies include, Microsoft PerformancePoint, PowerBI, SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), IBM Cognos, SAS Analytics, QlikView, SAP BusinessObjects, Tibco, MicroStrategy, Information Builders WebFOCUS, Sisense Business Intelligence and Analytics software and Oracle Enterprise Business Intelligence. Data warehouse technologies include Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, IBM, Teradata and EMC. Experience in data warehouse technology must include designing and implementing fact and dimension tables using the star and snowflake techniques, as well as the implementation of extraction, transformation and load (ETL) routines to cleanse data and promote data quality for inclusion into a data warehouse. Experience in using the standard, non-data warehousing functionality of a traditional relational database management software (RDBMS) such as Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle does not qualify as experience with data warehouse technologies.

These temporary positions will support Suffolk County's response efforts to COVID-19.

This position is in the Department of Information Technology and is located at various facilities in Suffolk County NY. Primary duties and responsibilities include providing Technology Point of Care Customer Service, resolving customer related technical software and hardware problems in accordance with established County policies and procedures. Responsibilities/Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Diagnosing and/or resolving problems in response to customer reported incidents via ServiceNow tickets
  • Overseeing IT support ServiceNow ticketing system activities and coordinating device files for software applications
  • Works on the development, configuration, implementation and management of Information Technology (IT) processing systems.
  • Custom software development activities involve C#, JavaScript, JQuery, HTML5, Bootstrap, Blazor, .NET, TSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, and DotNetNuke

  • Serves as technical and administrative manager for automated systems, including enterprise data processing, and telecommunications systems.
  • Monitors system and device utilization and develops system configurations for both new and existing equipment.
  • Performs system maintenance and repair activities, as well as software and hardware enhancements.
  • Maintains and supports VoIP systems, Automated Call Distribution Systems (ACD), video endpoints, virtual desktops, and all phones (IP, Soft, Analog, etc). VoIP environment includes Mitel IP Phones with use of Enterprise Call Center (ECC).
  • Reviews proposed changes to the client operating environment; suggests resolutions that are most likely to be used on a regular basis.
  • Identifies and breaks down problems using structured problem resolution approaches and works with network specialists, application developers, system administrators, and security specialists to prevent recurring problems.

Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office


The Chief Detective Investigator is responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of the investigative staff for the District Attorney's Office. The duties involve developing operating procedures for investigative methods and supervising the activities of investigators engaged in investigations. The incumbent directs the training of investigative personnel. Supervision is received from the District Attorney or the Chief Assistant District Attorney through conferences.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Ten years of diverse investigation experience in a local law enforcement agency and five additional years of experience working as a federal law enforcement investigator.” The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of working collaboratively with state and local law enforcement, past supervisory experience, and specialized expertise in investigations into drug operations, anti-terrorism and public corruption offenses. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of the investigative staff for the District Attorney's Office. The duties involve developing operating procedures for investigative methods and supervising the activities of investigators engaged in investigations.

The Deputy Chief Detective Investigator assists in the supervision of continuing investigations and otherwise coordinates activities of the District Attorney's investigative staff. Responsibility is included for directing and conducting particularly sensitive investigations and for conducting internal investigations as required. The work is performed under the general direction of the Chief Detective Investigator or District Attorney and is reviewed through conferences and submission of required reports

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Department of Education and an aggregate minimum of eight (8) years of experience as a detective or plainclothes investigator while employed as a police officer by a state, county, city, town or village police department within New York State. At least four years of this experience must have been in a supervisory capacity with responsibility for the investigation of syndicated, organized criminal activity in more than one of the following: arson; homicide; larceny by extortion; gambling; narcotics; prostitution; usury.

The Division Chief position requires an individual with unimpeachable integrity and significant prosecution and managerial experience to serve as a Division Chief overseeing the newly created Special Affairs Division.

Inclusive of this position, there are three Divisions -- the Trial Division, Investigations Division, and the Special Affairs Division -- each of which is overseen by a Division Chief. The Division Chiefs report to the Chief Assistant who in turn reports to the District Attorney, all of whom comprise the Executive Office, along with the Chief of Staff and Chief Investigator.

The Special Affairs Division Chief will oversee the newly created Conviction Integrity Bureau, the Public Integrity Bureau, and the Appeals and Training Bureau. Each Bureau is overseen by a Bureau Chief who will report to the Division Chief.

Candidates must possess a New York State License to practice law before the Bar of the State of New York.

The role of Deputy Commissioner in Suffolk County’s Department of Economic Development and Planning assists the Commissioner in strategic leadership of the department and programmatic, operations and personnel management of the Department’s divisions: Planning; Real Estate; Downtown and Transit Oriented Development; Business Development and Communications; Gabreski Airport and Finance and Administration.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Assist the Commissioner and the Chief Deputy Commissioner of Economic Development and Planning in the formulation of policies and procedures for the operation of the department.
  • The incumbent acts for and in place of the Commissioner and is required to exercise a considerable amount of independent judgment and initiative in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Supervision may be exercised over an administrative, technical, and clerical staff. Work is reviewed by the Commissioner through consultations and written reports.
  • Assists the Commissioner in the application and enforcement of agency policies and procedures
  • Oversees functions and operations for the various divisions within the Department
  • Acts as a liaison to the County Executive’s Office for special projects related to economic development and planning
  • Coordinates fiscal policies between the commissioner and staff involved in budgeting
  • Administers intergovernmental relations with the legislature and other County Departments
  • Reviews budgets and makes recommendations for the department’s divisions
  • Administers and coordinates, through a staff of administrative personnel, procedures for administration of Hotel/Motel tax supported funds to contract agencies.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ideal candidates should have experience executing complex publically funded programs and capital projects that promote economic development
  • Identify and implement operational efficiencies
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience liaising with local, state and federal governments
  • Identify, obtain, implement and comply with state and federal funding sources
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience managing large teams
  • In-depth knowledge of the principles, policies, and practices of the Department of Economic Development and Planning operations

Riverhead/Yaphank Correctional Facility

Salary: 75.00 per Hour

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy. At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, candidates must possess a Pharmacist License issued by the New York State Department of Education.

This is a professional position involving licensed pharmaceutical duties. The work is performed independently and involves such duties as checking prescription requests and preparing and dispensing prescription drugs. The pharmacist also provides advice to administrators, physicians, nurses and other professionals regarding pharmaceutical practices, drug reactions and drug literature. Supervision is received through an administrator or program director.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a college with federally authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. At the time of appointment and during employment in the title, candidates must:

Under general supervision, an employee in this position performs public health nursing services for individuals and families in home, schools, clinics, institutions or other assigned areas. The incumbent is responsible for assessing the health and nursing care needs of patients and families and providing nursing care as needed. Work is performed in accordance with public health nursing practices, administrative policies, and directives of professional supervisors. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services is looking for Registered Nurses to work in a local Correctional Facility environment as part of a medical unit team. We are currently seeking a full-time RN who is interested in working the overnight.

We are looking for responsible and dependable registered nurses who possess strong assessment skills to contribute as members of an interdisciplinary health care team.

Position Details:

  • Shift: 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM

GENERAL DUTIES:

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS) Office of Ecology is seeking an environmental professional to join its Innovative/Alternative Onsite Disposal System wastewater management team. The ideal candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and onsite sewage disposal systems. Experience in the design and maintenance of Innovative/Alternative Onsite Disposal Systems with NSF 245 certification is preferred. However, all levels of experience will be considered.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs public health and sanitary engineering work of moderate difficulty, subordinate to that which requires the services of a professional engineer. The work involves performing assignments requiring the application of engineering skills and knowledge to sanitary engineering projects in a county health district. Office of the Medical Examiner


An employee in this position performs postmortem examinations in cases coming under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner's Office in order to determine cause of death and manner of death. The work also involves visiting scenes of deaths and examining undisturbed bodies in cases where there may be a concern of a homicidal manner of death, as well as working with law enforcement and the District Attorney to assist in directing the preliminary investigation of such cases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York and current or prior certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology (AP) or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP); and either:

  1. Current or prior certification by the American Board of Pathology in Forensic Pathology (FP); or

Under general supervision, an employee in this Position performs technical laboratory work in the preparation of biological tissue specimens for histopathologic examination. The work involves utilizing sophisticated laboratory instruments and techniques to cut, mount, and stain tissue specimens, producing microscopic slides which assist the Medical Examiner or other consulting Pathologist in making histopathological diagnoses that may relate to a decedent’s cause of death. The employee adheres to established laboratory practices and procedures, including those involving infection control.

One year of experience in a laboratory setting that must have involved the performance of microtomy, and either:

The Suffolk County Department of Social Services is looking for experienced Registered Nurses to conduct nursing and social assessments for medically eligible clients receiving Medicaid home care services. The Community

Ideally situated in the heart of Long Island, Suffolk County has a population of 1.48 million people. Governmental Organization

In New York State, local governmental services are provided by counties, cities, towns, and villages. The County Comptroller receives and has custody of all County funds including County taxes and fees and reports the financial status of the County to the County Legislature.

The county employs over 9,500 people and has a FY 2021 budget of just over $3 billion.

About the Office

The Suffolk County office of Management and Budget (OMB) manages three major budgets for the County. The Operating Budget, the Capital Budget and the Suffolk Community College Budget. For each budget the office is charged with developing a recommended budget for consideration, modification and adoption by the Suffolk County Legislature. Each Budget has its own sets of parameters and due dates, the typical budget cycle ranges from two to five months, with the operating budget being the most labor intensive.

The office is responsible for assisting departments with their requests and has a team of analysts who prepare the critical analysis needed in order to evaluate levels of funding. The Director then makes recommendations to the County Executive and his staff for inclusion into the final product. About the Position

In accordance with the Suffolk County Charter the Budget Director shall perform such duties and functions as the County Executive may direct. The Budget Director is in charge of the planning, preparation and the presentation of the County’s operating, capital and college budgets, as well as the Multi-Year Plan (MYP) and participates in the all borrowing proposals.

Essential duties include:

  • Directs the work activities of assigned staff, including the compilation, review and interpretation of financial data; recommendations for future; and the implementation of new ideas and financial strategies;
  • Plans an directs the County’s annuals budget process by directing the review, recommendation and presentation of operational and financial plans submitted by departments that outline the goals and objectives for programs and services including funding levels and new initiatives, estimated costs and expenses;
  • Maintains communication with elected officials and department heads providing relevant financial information as required;
  • Ensures accuracy of budgetary information and research and prepares analytical reports.

The office is comprised has 00 employees, including a Deputy and Assistant Deputy Budget Director. The Budget Director is accountable for an operating budget of over $3 billion, annual capital plan of $100M and a community college budget of $120M annually.

The County seeks a Budget Director with a public finance background and extensive knowledge of governmental accounting. A potential candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration or a related field and eight (10) years of professional work experience which includes direct budget related work and/or financial administration, including two (2) years of supervisory experience. Suffolk County Francis S. Gabreski Airport seeks an Assistant Airport Manager for our office in Westhampton Beach, NY. Francis S. Gabreski Airport is a general aviation - joint use airport which is home to the Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing. On average Gabreski Airport handles between 50,000 and 60,000 aircraft operations each year.

GENERAL DUTIES:

The role will assist with the following:

  • Supervision of maintenance of the airport and buildings
  • Negotiations of contracts, leases, and agreements for rental of real property
  • Grant applications and requests for proposals
  • Overseeing construction work done on the airfield
  • Providing airfield escorts
  • Preparation and maintenance of all account keeping, cost analysis, inventory, and related business management records, such as operation budget, capital budget and single audit as related to grants

Suffolk County Community College


The Registered Nurse Supervisor reports to the Associate Dean of Student Services. Duties of the position include:

  1. Provides emergency/first aid care as needed to the college community including students, staff, and faculty.
  2. Coordinates the processing of student immunization records in compliance with New York State and Suffolk County Health Laws. Uses computer software programs as needed to locate and enter student immunization records and clearances.
  3. Oversees student clearance requirements for clinical assignments offered by Health Careers programs, e.g. Nursing.
  4. Coordinates all activities and programs offered by the Health Services Office.
  5. Hires, supervises and evaluates part-time staff.
  6. Coordinates and provides nursing coverage for Commencement and other College events, as requested by administration.
  7. Prepares reports as needed including an annual and mid-year report.
  8. Inventories, orders, and maintains medications, NARCAN, first aid supplies and campus AED's and maintains proper levels of office supplies and equipment.

Four (4) years of experience as a Registered Nurse, two (2) years of which must have been in ambulatory care.

Necessary Special Requirement: Candidates must possess a Registered Nurse license issued by the State of New York. Current registration must be maintained through the term of the employment.

As per the Association of Municipal Employees (AME) contract, the starting annual salary is $52,304 (Grade 22). Position is eligible for medical benefits as offered by the College.
