The Suffolk County Department of Health Services is offering mpox vaccines at no charge to those who are at risk on July 13, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Northwell Health Physician Partners Immediate Care located at 153 Doctor’s Walk, Cherry Grove, NY.
“We are collaborating with Northwell Health to dispense the JYNNEOS vaccine in order to the protect the public from potential spread of the mpox virus,” said Dr. Gregson Pigott, Suffolk County’s Health Commissioner. “We encourage all people who are at risk to protect themselves and their loved ones by getting two doses of the mpox vaccine.”
Mpox is a viral illness related to the virus that causes smallpox and is characterized by fever, blistering rash, and swollen lymph nodes. Mpox can be spread through close contact with an animal or person infected with mpox and through contact with contaminated materials.
CDC recommends vaccination against mpox if:
- You had known or suspected exposure to someone with Mpox
- You had a sex partner in the past 2 weeks who was diagnosed with Mpox
- You are a gay, bisexual, or other man who has sex with men or a transgender, nonbinary, or gender-diverse person who in the past 6 months has had any of the following:
- A new diagnosis of one or more sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis)
- More than one sex partner
- You have had any of the following in the past 6 months:
- Sex at a commercial sex venue (like a sex club or bathhouse)
- Sex related to a large commercial event or in a geographic area (city or county for example) where Mpox virus transmission is occurring
- You have a sex partner with any of the above risks
- You anticipate experiencing any of the above scenarios
- You are at risk for occupational exposure to Orthopox viruses (e.g., certain people who work in a laboratory or a healthcare facility).
JYNNEOS is a two-dose vaccine developed to protect against mpox and smallpox infections. For the best protection against mpox, both doses of the vaccine are needed. The second dose should be given four weeks after the first dose. Those who cannot get the second dose on time, should get it as soon as possible to complete the series. Maximum protection is reached two weeks after the second dose.
