The following beaches are closed to bathing due to the finding of bacteria at levels in excess of acceptable criteria: Corey Beach in Bayport, Terraces on the Sound in Rocky Point, Benjamins Beach in Bay Shore, Short Beach in Smithtown, Nissequogue Point Beach, Sayville Marina Park Beach, Bayport Beach, and West Islip Beach.
Valley Grove Beach in Eatons Neck, Tanner Park Beach in Copiague and Lake Ronkonkoma’s Islip Town Beach remain closed due to excess bacteria.
Beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
