Seventeen More Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus

     Heckscher State Park advised to limit activities to daytime hours

Suffolk County Health Commissioner James L. Tomarken, MD, MPH, MBA, MSW, announced today that 17 more mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus. The samples, all Culex pipiens-restuans, were collected between August 25th and August 29th from Heckscher State Park in Islip (1), Blydenburgh Park in Smithtown (1), and Gardiner Park in West Bay Shore (1),  as well as from  Huntington (1), Northport (1), Dix Hills (2), West Islip (2), North Babylon (1), Copiague (2) Brentwood (1), Bay Shore (2), Holbrook (1) and Rocky Point (1).

Lake Ronkonkoma at Brookhaven Park removed from the list of water bodies that contain blue-green algae

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has removed Lake Ronkonkoma at Brookhaven Park from its list of water bodies that may contain toxic levels of blue-green algae.  Residents who wish to wade or engage in recreation  in these waters are advised to proceed and to use caution if they observe discolored water.

Fifteen More Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Suffolk County Health Commissioner James L. Tomarken, MD, MPH, MBA, MSW, announced today that 15 more mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus. The samples, all Culex pipiens-restuans, were collected on August 19th and August 20th from Huntington (1), Bay Shore (1), Dix Hills (1), West Islip (1), and Nesconset (1) and between August 27th and August 29th from Huntington Station (1), North Babylon (1), West Babylon (1), Selden (1) East Setauket (1), Rocky Point (2), Holtsville (1), and Patchogue (1).

County Executive Steve Bellone Announces Free "Compression Only" CPR Classes

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced today that the Department Health Services’ Division of Emergency Medical Services will conduct a series of “Compression-Only” Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) classes. This one-hour class is free of charge and open to persons of all ages who are capable of compressing another person’s chest.
