Healthy Suffolk: Learn to Be…Tobacco Free

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Health Commissioner James Tomarken, MD, encourage residents who use tobacco to obtain help in breaking their addiction through Suffolk County’s “Learn to Be …Tobacco Free” program.

Ground Treatment for Mosquitoes Scheduled

Weather permitting, the Suffolk County Department of Public Works will treat sections of Fire Island as part of its ongoing annual effort to control adult mosquitoes. This will be the first ground treatment for mosquitoes scheduled this year. 

Lake Ronkonkoma Closed to Bathing

Lake Ronkonkoma, in the town of Islip, is closed to bathing due to the finding of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria.

Ozone Health Advisory

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an ozone health advisory for the Long Island region, for Wednesday June 29, 2016. Young children, the elderly, those who exercise or are involved in strenuous outdoor work, and those with pre-existing respiratory or heart problems, limit strenuous outdoor activity. 

New Cyanobacteria Blooms in Southampton

Recent sampling performed by SUNY Stony Brook has confirmed new cyanobacteria blooms, more commonly known as blue–green algae, in Old Town Pond  in Southampton.
