SYEP empowers eligible youth, ages 14-20, in Suffolk County by providing valuable work experience, career exploration, mentorship, financial empowerment, and professional development opportunities. Participants enhance their employment skills while making a significant contribution to the economic growth of Suffolk County.

2023 Income Guidelines

The Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing, and Consumer Affairs receives funding from the Federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program to support the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). If youth and/or their families receive Public Assistance, wages that are earned by youth during the program do not affect benefits received.

Youth applicants automatically qualify for the program if they are receiving: Food Stamps, Public Assistance, Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), Social Security Income (SSI), or Medicaid. If you do not meet the income guidelines and do not receive any of the benefits listed, your application will still be considered based on availability of additional funding.

The Suffolk County Summer Youth Employment Program is a program that provides youth ages 14-20 with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and earn money during the summer months.

Eligibility for the program is determined by age and residency. Participants must be between the ages of 14-20 and be residents of Suffolk County, New York.

The types of jobs available through the program vary from year to year and depend on the needs of participating employers. However, typical jobs include Clerical Work, Social Media and Outreach, Food Service, Technology, Maintenance, Child Care, Camp Counselor, Teachers Aide and others.

Youth earn the current NYS minimum wage which is $15 per hour.

The program typically runs for 7 weeks during the summer months.
