The Suffolk County Planning Federation was formed by Suffolk County in conjunction with the American Planning Association to provide training opportunities for municipal planning and zoning officials. Through training, better and more effective planning can result. The Federation also serves as a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences among officials from Suffolk County’s local municipalities. Funding for the Federation is provided by the Suffolk County Legislature
Since its formation, the Suffolk County Planning Federation has hosted numerous educational forums and provides training opportunities for local officials and other interested citizens. The Federation holds an annual training conference to provide training on current topics including regional development issues, land use case law, and varying perspectives on local planning. The American Planning Association
The American Planning Association (APA) is a professional organization representing the field of urban planning in the United States. The Association's main function is to serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas between people who work in the field of urban planning. Membership of the APA’s Long Island Section includes private and municipal planners, public officials, and citizens who work or reside in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. The Long Island Section offers educational and social events including workshops, panels, guest speakers, and joint meetings with other professional groups. The APA’s New York Metro Chapter supports planning professionals through advocating for good planning practice, hosting diverse events, and facilitating professional development opportunities in the New York City Metropolitan Area.
