Q: What are the benefits of the Suffolk County Wastewater Management District?
A: The CWMD will streamline operations and implement a uniform billing system for all connected properties.
Q: What changes have been made to my sewer bill or property tax bill?
A: Effective January 1, 2026, properties connected to the Suffolk County Wastewater Management District will receive a bill. Sewer charges will no longer appear on your property tax bill. Please refer to the notice you received by mail that details the billing changes in your area.
Q: Will I still receive charges on my tax bill?
A: No, current sewer charges will no longer be included on your property tax bill. You will receive a CWMD bill for all sewer charges.
Q: How do I find out if I am connected to the sewers?
A: If you have received a bill and/or letter and are unsure of your connection status, please email sewerconnectionstatus@suffolkcountyny.gov. A representative will contact you.
Q: I am having a problem with my sewer connection. Who do I contact?
A: If you are experiencing difficulty with your sewer connection and are located within the Southwest Sewer Area, please call (631) 852-4150. For all other sewer areas please call (631) 852-4109.
Q: How often will I receive a bill?
A: Residential properties will receive quarterly bills. Commercial properties will receive annual bills.
Q: How often will my rate change?
A: Rates are set in the Adopted Operating Budget each year.
Q: What is an “SFE”?
A: An “SFE” stands for Single Family Equivalent. It is estimated that a single family uses approximately 225 gallons of water per day. Therefore, 1 SFE=225 gpd. For residential users, a single family home is billed 1 SFE, a two family home is billed 2 SFE, and a three family home is billed 3 SFE. For most commercial properties, the prior year's annual water usage is divided by 82,125 (225 gpd x 365=82,125 gpy) and rounded up to the nearest whole number to determine the number of SFEs billed.
Q: What is the Obj/Haz Monitoring Charge?
A: This charge is for the operation of a mandated non-residential (commercial) Pretreatment and Objectionable/Hazardous Waste Monitoring Program. All commercial properties are charged this fee.

A: A $20.00 service charge is assessed to any payment returned to the Suffolk County Comptroller, pursuant to Suffolk County Resolution #968-1997.
Q: What happens if I do not pay my bill?
A: Sewer charges become liens against the property to which services have been provided pursuant to Section 266 of the County Law of New York State. Any amounts billed prior to August 1st and left unpaid as of October 1st will appear on the Town’s December 1st real property tax bill as sewer arrears.
Q: I am selling or purchasing a property. What do I need to do?
A: We are not automatically notified of changes in ownership. Please contact us when you have a closing date so that we can provide you with the current balance on the account and to change any contact information.
Please note that sewer charges and credits transfer with the property. Normally, any outstanding balance is addressed at closing with the advice of your attorney and title company. Our office does not prorate bills.
Q: My water was turned off. Why am I still receiving a sewer bill?
A: Sewer service and water service are provided by separate entities. Sewer service is not disconnected for non-payment. All properties with a viable sewer connection are billed. The only way to stop receiving a sewer bill is to disconnect from the sewer system, which is only permitted when the house or building is being demolished.
