County Executive Bellone and Legislator/DPO Horsley Announce Unprecedented Sewer Infrastructure Study

First Comprehensive Waste Water Treatment Infrastructure Data Collection

In a move designed to provide baseline information deemed critical to economic development and environmental planning in Suffolk, County Executive Steve Bellone and Deputy Presiding Officer (DPO) Wayne Horsley today announced a comprehensive initiative to map all waste water treatment facilities – both public and private – across the entire county. 

One Confirmed Human Case of West Nile Virus

Hauppauge, NY – Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services James L. Tomarken said today that the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has confirmed one human case of West Nile virus, the first confirmed case of the virus in Suffolk County this year. 

Vector Control

Weather permitting; the Suffolk County Department of Public Works is planning to treat sections of the following communities as part of their ongoing annual efforts to control adult mosquitoes.

Tanner Park Beach Closed, Steers Beach Closed, Bayberry Cove Beach Reopened

James L. Tomarken, Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, said that Tanner Park Beach in Copiague and Steers Beach in Northport are closed to bathing due to the finding of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria. 

Forty-Six Additional Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Hauppauge, NY – Suffolk County Health Services (SCDHS) Commissioner James L. Tomarken announced that 46 additional mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus. The mosquito samples, collected between July 24 and July 28, were from locations in Holtsville, Huntington Station, North Babylon, Yaphank (2), Rocky Point, East Northport, Northport (2), Farmingville (3), Copiague (4), Port Jefferson Station (2), West Islip (2), South Huntington, Lindenhurst (3), West Babylon (11), East Setauket (2), Ridge (2), Brentwood (2), Dix Hills, Nesconset (2), Mattituck and Greenlawn.  To date this year, 125 mosquito samples -- all Culex pipiens-restuans -- and thirteen birds have tested positive for the virus.
