Seaweed Cultivation Program Development

In 2022, Suffolk County was authorized by New York State to add Seaweed to the existing Aquaculture Lease Program (ALP) in Peconic and Gardiners Bays. Based on comments received by the public and key stakeholders through April 30, 2024, we are evaluating the input and considering the expansion of ALP to include seaweed. Should Suffolk County draft an expanded program, it will be available for public comment before it is adopted by the Suffolk County legislature.

The Seaweed Program will be incorporated into ALP and therefore, the existing shellfish cultivation zones will also be utilized for seaweed cultivation. As part of the input process, Suffolk County is accepting comments on the existing ALP maps regarding either shellfish or seaweed.
