Recently, Suffolk County was authorized by New York State to add seaweed to the existing Aquaculture Lease Program (ALP) in Peconic and Gardiners Bays.
The Department of Economic Development and Planning is drafting an expanded program to include seaweed cultivation. A finalized draft will be made available for public comment before it is adopted by the Suffolk County legislature. Information regarding public meetings and public comment periods will be posted here.

The Seaweed Program will be incorporated into ALP and therefore, the existing shellfish cultivation zones will also be utilized for seaweed cultivation. As part of the input process, Suffolk County is accepting comments on the existing ALP maps regarding either shellfish or seaweed.
