About

The Suffolk County Transportation Division oversees the operation of the Suffolk County Transit Fixed Route System, On-Demand Zones and Paratransit services. The division manages transportation planning and reporting in compliance with State and Federal requirements, represents the County at the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council, and prepares and executes capital transit grants from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT).

Suffolk County Transit is an affordable public transportation service with 26 fixed routes and 2 On-Demand zones, operating 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Programs and Services

Suffolk County Transit (SCT)

SCT is a local public bus system consisting of 26 bus routes extending from the Nassau / Suffolk County line on the west to East Hampton and Orient Point on the east. The bus system is County owned, planned and managed. It is operated by privately owned companies under contract with the County.

Transit On-Demand

SCT manages two (2) On-Demand transit zones on the South Fork. On-Demand transit may be reserved for travel, within the designated zones, using an app or by phone. These zones are operated by privately owned companies under contract with the County. The Transportation Division provides planning and oversite in these areas.

Suffolk County Accessible Transportation (SCAT)

The Suffolk County Accessible Transportation (SCAT) provides travel options for eligible disabled individuals under federal guidelines, offering services similar to SCT fixed routes. Registered passengers can book trips up to 5 days in advance or for the next day, on a first-come, first-served basis. SCAT is available to all disabled persons who qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act and have registered with the Suffolk County Office for People with Disabilities.

Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and Transportation Coordinating Committee (TCC)

The TIP is a three to five year programming document which includes all the regions' transportation projects which are seeking federal funds. The local planning for the TIP occurs through the Nassau/Suffolk TCC. Suffolk County participates in and is a voting member of the N/S TCC. The Transportation Division represents the County on the TCC.

Long and Short Range Transportation Planning

As a member of the New York Metropolitan Council (NYMTC), Suffolk County is responsible for supplying pertinent data as related to the Suffolk element of the Regional Transportation Plan for the New York Metropolitan area. Every urbanized area in the United States of more than 50,000 persons must have a designated Metropolitan Planning Organization in order to qualify for Federal highway and transit funds. NYMTC is the MPO for the downstate New York area. The Transportation Division serves as the County's liaison to the Council.
