Weatherization and Energy Audits

Weatherization programs are available to make the homes of very low-income people, especially the elderly and disabled, more energy efficient. An inspector will conduct an energy audit, using a variety of tests and tools, to determine the most cost-effective means of reducing energy consumption in your home. Typical energy conservation measures employed may include installing insulation, repairing or replacing doors and window, caulking, weather-stripping, interior air sealing, repair or replacement of heating systems and installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

In Suffolk County, several weatherization programs are operated by:

Community Development Corporation of Long Island: The CDC offers a variety of programs to low income families and senior citizens throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Click here to visit their website.

Energy Audits
The Long Island Power Authority operates a program, for income eligible homeowners, which provides assistance to help manage electric usage. The Residential Energy Affordability Partnership "REAP" program, can offer help in lowering monthly electric bills and making your home healthier and safer.

The program begins with a free energy audit of your home. Members of LIPA's REAP team will come to your home and inspect your electric applicances, heating system, lighting, and other electric consuming equipment, to determine their energy efficiency. They may suggest strategies to lower your consumption of energy such as lowering your thermostat or installing more energy efficient light bulbs. If you qualify, they may also install energy saving measures, free of charge.

To obtain further information call LIPA to speak to a REAP professional.
