CORRIDOR STUDY OF COUNTY ROAD 39

Data Collection

Suffolk County Road 39 requires extensive data collection during the Spring and Summer of 2024 across the south fork to support planning and engineering efforts.

As part of this project, traffic data has been collected from NY 27 (Sunrise Highway) at Exit 63 to NY 27 (Montauk Highway) in East Hampton, as well as

  • Automatic Traffic Recorders (ATRs): 24 hours a day/7 days a week counts
  • Video Turning Moving Counts (TMCs): 12 hours of video counts of intersection turning movement by vehicle class (including trucks, buses, cars, bikes, pedestrians)
  • Field Observations conducted by project team including parking maneuvers and driveway entry/exits, bus blockages, queue lengths, and non-standard operations
  • Vehicle Travel Time Runs taken during peak hours by project team are used to compare travel over the same stretch of road at varying times of day and at different times of the year
  • Big Data Travel Time/Speed (1,000s of vehicle trips per day): travel times are helpful as it provides more details in solving problems and helps model calibration, route comparison and studying alternative routes
  • Origin-Destination Data – (1,000s of vehicle trips per day):O&D data contributes to an understanding of traffic patterns and how roadway usage changes during congested vs non-congested conditions (i.e.: number of detoured vehicles during peak periods)
  • Land Use Data: Location, amount, and densities of residential, commercial, and park/open space properties. In a traffic study, land use data (i.e.: types and locations of land use as well as densities) is used to determine the factors that generate traffic
  • Right of Way (ROW) Data: Identify limits of Suffolk County ownership and adjacent property owners to understand impacts of potential improvement alternatives
  • Crash Data: 3 years of crash reports to identify high crash locations, crash patterns, and contributing factors
