More Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Commissioner James Tomarken announced today that 10 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus. The samples, all Culex pipiens-restuans, were collected between September 11th  and September 12th from locations in Huntington (1), East Northport (3), Copiague (1), Northport (1), Greenlawn (1), Huntington Station (1), Port Jefferson Station (1) and Nesconset (1). To date this year, 168 mosquito samples and ten birds have tested positive for West Nile virus. No horses and one (1) human case have tested positive for West Nile virus in Suffolk County this year.

Upcoming Diabetes Self-Management Education Seminars

James Tomarken, Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, announced today that the Department of Health Services, in collaboration with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, will hold diabetes seminars starting in October for county residents in the communities of Patchogue, Shirley and Copiague.

Suffolk County Offers Support for Residents at Risk for Diabetes “Healthy Heart, Healthy Weight, Healthy Attitude”

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services, in collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension, is offering a program to residents who are overweight and struggling with high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure, all which contribute to risk for diabetes.
