Under Section 103 Article V of the Highway Law, Article 10, Section 385 of the V. & T. Law any vehicle of a size or weight exceeding the limitations, as specified below, traveling on County roads must have a permit from this Department.

All hauling permit applications are subject to review by the Bridges/Structures Section and may incur Suffolk County bridge weight limit restrictions.

Three (3) types of permits, as listed below, are issued by this Department.

Special Hauling Blanket Permit

A Suffolk County Special Hauling Blanket Permit is a permit that allows an overweight and/or oversized vehicle to travel along Suffolk County roadways for a duration of one year or until the auto liability insurance certificate expires, whichever comes first.

Superload Permit

Per NYSDOT requirements, any vehicle in excess of 16ft wide, 16ft high, 160ft long, 200,000lbs gross weight, or any combination of the above, will require a Superload Permit. When a Superload Permit is required by NYSDOT for any oversized/overweight vehicle traveling along Suffolk County roadways, a pre-approval letter from Suffolk County should be requested by the Permittee/Hauler. Once a NYSDOT Superload has been issued, it must be submitted to the office for final approval.

Special Hauling Trip Permit

A Suffolk County Special Hauling Trip Permit is a permit that allows for an overweight and/or oversized vehicle to travel along Suffolk County Roadways for a single trip or a round trip between two set locations, as specified on the NYSDOT Trip Permit. Any vehicle with dimensions in excess of 80ft long or 12ft wide will require a Suffolk County Trip Permit if there are Suffolk County roadways within the travel route. A NYSDOT Trip Permit should be obtained first and subsequently submitted to the Suffolk County Permit Office for review.
