Suffolk County Announces Breastfeeding Awareness Event

Families invited for a morning of camaraderie, support, and fun at the beach

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine announced the county’s Breastfeeding Support and Awareness Celebration will be held on Saturday, August 2, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Town of Babylon’s Tanner Beach Senior Center. The event is open to the public and is held in recognition of World Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7, 2025.

“This World Breastfeeding Week, we recognize the importance of breast milk for babies to help them grow healthy and strong,” said Executive Romaine. “To show our support, we invite families to join our staff and community partners for a morning of camaraderie and fun at the beach.”

The event is an opportunity for expecting mothers, new mothers, and their families to socialize, learn from one another, and support one another in their celebration of their breastfeeding journey. There will be food, games, activities, face painting and prizes. No parking fee or proof of residency will be required to attend the event.

“Our staff and partners are huge advocates of breastfeeding and strong proponents that breastfeeding mothers get the multi-level support they need,” said Dr. Gregson Pigott, Suffolk County Health Commissioner. “I thank our partners in the Suffolk County Women's Health Coalition who promote healthy families and who have helped make our breastfeeding awareness event a success since 2017.”

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated the first week of August every year, supported by WHO, UNICEF and health organizations throughout the world. The theme for 2025 is "Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.” This theme emphasizes the importance of establishing long-lasting support systems that enable mothers worldwide to breastfeed their children.

The Department of Health Services WIC Program has been collecting testimonies and photos of breastfeeding babies for several months and will feature them on Suffolk County Department of Health Service’s website and social media channels during August, Breastfeeding Awareness Month.

Suffolk County Executive’s Office of Women’s Services and Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement; Suffolk County Department of Health Services: Perinatal Health Services Program, WIC Program, Early Intervention Program, Office of Minority Health, and Bureau of Public Health Nursing, Good Samaritan University Hospital, Sun River Health, LI Head Start; the Maurer Foundation, Stony Brook Medicine and WIC Program, the Family Service League Healthy Families, St. Charles Hospital; Northwell Health, South Shore University Hospital, BFREE Team, Peconic Bay Medical Center, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, EOC of Suffolk Inc., and Teen Parent Program.
