Suffolk County offers Free Diabetes Prevention Program

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Department of Health Services Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken invite residents who are at risk for developing type-2 diabetes to participate, free of charge, in the county- administered National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP).

Aerial Larvicide Notification

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works’ Division of Vector Control plans to treat parts of the following salt marshes by helicopter to control mosquito larvae.  

Four Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. James L. Tomarken announced today that four mosquito samples (all Culex pipiens-restuans) collected between September 5, and September 11, 2016, have tested positive for West Nile virus.

New Cyanobacteria Blooms in Smithtown and Montauk

Sampling performed by SUNY Stony Brook has confirmed new cyanobacteria blooms, more commonly known as blue–green algae, in Blydenburgh Lake at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown and Big Reed Pond in Montauk County Park.

Seven mosquito samples and one horse tested positive for West Nile virus, said Dr. James L. Tomarken, Commissioner of Health Services.
