Suffolk County Law Limiting Tobacco Sales To Persons over age 21 Takes Effect

Commissioner of Health Services James Tomarken, MD, MPH, reminds vendors and residents that as of January 1, 2015, it is illegal to sell tobacco, e-cigarettes, and liquid nicotine in Suffolk County to persons under the age of 21. Prior to January 1, it had been illegal to sell these products to persons under the age of 19.

Suffolk County Offers Free Diabetes Self-Management Program

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone joined Department of Health Commissioner James Tomarken, MD, MPH, MBA, MSW, to invite residents who have diabetes to attend a free program that will enable them to manage their diabetes.  The program, conducted by the Department of Health Services in collaboration with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, comprises four classes that cover suggestions for keeping blood sugar in target range, choosing a healthy meal plan and balancing food, exercise and medications. 

County Executive Bellone and Health Officials Advise Residents to Make Sure they are Up to Date on Immunizations

As the United States experiences a large, multi-state outbreak of measles, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Legislator William Spencer, MD, and Commissioner of Health Services James Tomarken, MD, MPH, urge residents to make sure that they are up to date on their immunizations.
