Suffolk County Law Limiting Tobacco Sales to Persons over Age 21 Takes Effect

Commissioner of Health Services James Tomarken, MD, MPH, reminds vendors and residents that as of January 1, 2015, it is illegal to sell tobacco, e-cigarettes, and liquid nicotine in Suffolk County to persons under the age of 21. Prior to January 1, it had been illegal to sell these products to persons under the age of 19.

Suffolk Health Commissioner Reports Case of Mumps

Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services Dr. James Tomarken reported today a case of Mumps in an individual who lives in the Town of Brookhaven and works at Smithtown High School East. The case was confirmed this week by the New York State Public Health Laboratory in Albany.

Suffolk Health Commissioner Reports First Human Case of West Nile Virus this Year

Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services James Tomarken reported today the first and only human case of West Nile virus in Suffolk County in 2014.  The individual, a male over 55 years of age who resides in the Town of Islip, was hospitalized in late August upon experiencing symptoms consistent with West Nile virus.  The patient has since recovered and returned home.
