Suffolk County to Parents: Protect Your Child from Measles, Whooping Cough, Mumps…

 As the number of reported cases of measles continues to rise in New York City, and as pertussis continues to circulate locally, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Health Services, remind parents to make sure that their children are up-to-date on immunizations.

Suffolk County Schedules Public Health Hearing

Suffolk County law directs the Department of Health Services to hold two public health hearings each year.  The purpose of these hearings is to obtain input from residents of Suffolk County to guide the county in allocating its health care resources. 

EnvironmentalQuality Board of Review Meeting

The Board of Review hears requests for variances and waivers to the county’s requirements for water and sewage disposal for new construction, and for storage of toxic or hazardous materials, as stated in the Suffolk County Sanitary Code. A listing of each month’s scheduled hearings may be obtained in the days prior to the hearing by contacting the Department of Health Services’ Division of Environmental Quality at 852-5800.

Diabetes Self-Management Education Seminar

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services in collaboration with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County is offering a free course on managing diabetes.

Free Fitness Classes for Mature Residents

County Executive Steve Bellone and Commissioner of Health Services James Tomarken, MD, invite mature residents to attend workshops focused on falls prevention. The programs aim to empower mature adults to carry out behaviors that reduce the risks of falls and improve their quality of life.
