Cold Weather Advisory

Winter weather conditions are expected deteriorate today and to continue into Friday morning. The National Weather Service predicts snow and strong winds followed by severely cold temperatures.  Health officials recommend that residents take the following precautions:

Resolve to be Tobacco Free

As millions of Americans prepare to make New Year’s resolutions, Suffolk County officials encourage county residents who wish to quit smoking to seek the help of a trained advisor.

Resolve to Stay Independent for Life

County Executive Steve Bellone and Commissioner of Health Services James Tomarken, MD, invite mature residents to attend workshops focused on falls prevention. The programs aim to empower mature adults to carry out behaviors that reduce the risks of falls and improve their quality of life.

Not Too Late to Benefit from Flu Vaccine

Noting that influenza activity usually peaks in January, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Health Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken are urging all residents who have not yet received this season’s flu vaccination to get one as soon as possible. Flu season runs from October through May.

Board of Review Hearing

The Board of Review hears requests for variances and waivers to the county’s requirements for water and sewage disposal for new construction, and for storage of toxic or hazardous materials, as stated in the Suffolk County Sanitary Code. A listing of each month’s scheduled hearings may be obtained in the days prior to the hearing by contacting the Department of Health Services’ Division of Environmental Quality at 852-5800.
