Our Mission

The mission of the Department of Social Services is to provide financial assistance and support services to eligible Suffolk County residents in a cost effective and efficient manner, simultaneously protecting the vulnerable while encouraging their independence and self-sufficiency.

Biennial Employment Plan

The 2024/2025 Suffolk County Department of Social Services Biennial Employment Plan is available for public comment from 11/2/23 to 12/2/23 (30 days) and can be reviewed at The Suffolk County Department of Social Services Smithtown Office located at 200 Wireless Blvd, Hauppauge NY. Child Care Assistance Program Eligibility Questionnaire

The New York State Office of Children & Family Services Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) recently announced the launch of the CCAP Eligibility Questionnaire to allow parents and caretakers to answer a few questions to see if they are eligible for CCAP. You can access the questionnaire directly by going to: https://hs.ocfs.ny.gov/CCAPeligibility/. Or, go to the OCFS CCAP website at: https://ocfs.ny.gov/programs/childcare/ccap/ and click on "Do I qualify for CCAP".

Child Care Funding

The Suffolk County Department of Social Services provides free or low cost subsidized child care services for eligible families residing in Suffolk County. Please see attached for more information.

SUBMIT DOCUMENTS ELECTRONICALLY

Suffolk County Department of Social Services (DSS) now has a new, free mobile application (app) available to county residents that enables them to submit necessary documents. NYDocSubmit is a mobile app that provides individuals who have applied for, or are receiving DSS benefits, the ability to simply and quickly submit documentation to the DSS. This mobile app is available for download on Google Play™ or the Apple App Store™ and can be used to take photos of documents and upload them to Suffolk DSS. During this time of COVID-19 restrictions, having the ability to submit the necessary documentation from the comfort and safety of home is essential to continue supporting families in our county.

SWEP

The Suffolk Works Employment Program (SWEP) helps Temporary Assistance applicants and recipients obtain the skills they need to find employment. Once employed, families can receive help with childcare and other work-related expenses.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) issues electronic benefits that can be used like cash to purchase food. SNAP helps low-income working people, senior citizens, the disabled and others feed their families. Eligibility and benefit levels are based on household size, income and other factors.

The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) helps low-income people pay the cost of heating their homes.

Temporary Housing Assistance

Persons who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless should apply for assistance at a Social Services Center.

Medical Assistance (MEDICAID) provides essential medical services for persons receiving Public Assistance and other low-income persons.

If you believe an individual has received welfare assistance improperly, please take the time to share this information with us.

Report Child Abuse or Maltreatment

The New York State Central Register notifies the local child protective services (CPS) immediately. An investigation will begin with 24 hours. This will usually include a telephone call back to the reporting source to verify the information provided and to begin assessing any risk to the child.

Child Support Enforcement Bureau

The Division locates absent parents, establishes legal paternity for children born outside marriage, establishes/enforces child support orders and monitors collection and disbursement of child support payments.

A Department of Social Services pilot project. This application is designed to replace the daily phone calls between Department of Social Services Placement personnel and Housing providers to request the previous day’s attendance and room availability at your facility.
