Five Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Suffolk County Health Services (SCDHS) Commissioner James L. Tomarken announced today that five mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus.

Water Quality Advisory for Private-Well Owners in Areas of Westhampton

The US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) has identified two chemicals known as PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) as emerging contaminants.  Through monitoring conducted under a US EPA program known as the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule, PFOS was detected in public supply wells in the vicinity of the New York State Air National Guard Base at Gabreski Airport located at Old Riverhead Road in Westhampton Beach.

New Cyanobacteria Blooms in Sagaponack, Southampton, and Stony Brook

Recent sampling performed by SUNY Stony Brook has confirmed new cyanobacteria blooms, more commonly known as blue–green algae.

Lake Ronkonkoma Beach Closure Lifted

The beach closure issued on July 14, 2016, for Lake Ronkonkoma in the Town of Islip has been lifted, as results of recent samples collected show the water quality to be within acceptable levels. Copiague, Lindenhurst and Strongs Neck beaches remain closed to bathing

Ground Treatment for Mosquitoes Scheduled

If weather permits, the Suffolk County Department of Public Works will treat sections of several communities as part of its ongoing effort to control adult mosquitoes.
