Twenty-two Additional Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Hauppauge, NY – Suffolk County Health Services (SCDHS) Commissioner James L. Tomarken announced that 22 additional mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus. The mosquito samples, collected between July 17 and July 20, were from locations in Northport (4), South Huntington, Huntington, Holbrook, Bay Shore (2), Gardiner Park in Islip, Brentwood (2), Blydenburgh Park in Smithtown (1), Southampton (2), Holtsville (2), Yaphank, Deer Park, Dix Hills, Southold, and Mastic Beach.  To date this year, 79 mosquito samples -- all Culex pipiens-restuans -- and eight birds have tested positive for the virus.

Vector Control

Weather permitting; the Suffolk County Department of Public Works is planning to treat sections of the following communities as part of their ongoing annual efforts to control adult mosquitoes.

Alcohol and Substance Abuse Subcommittee of the Community Mental Hygiene Advisory Board

The next meeting of Suffolk County Department of Health Services’ Alcohol and Substance Abuse Subcommittee of the Community Mental Hygiene Advisory Board is scheduled.

Vector Control

The treatments for vector control scheduled for Fire Island on July 26 have been canceled due to poor weather conditions.
